The SA TARONJA - Concert of the Month
Concert of the Month February 2010 - GEOFF EVANS & Band
- Who in Mallorca hasn't heard of the deep-voiced baritone from London - Geoff Evans - who is based in S'Arracó? Since the 70s he has been contributing to the local scene. As the "Lonely rock'n roller", he was generous with his talent and a fixture at many S'Arracó parties. Geoff Evans - brillant photographer, musician, one-time gallery owner, builder, carpenter, charmer and famous ladies' man.....
-
- With so many talents, for people to take him seriously as a singer has meant a lot of hard work and persistence. He has now been giving concerts around the island for more than a decade, presenting not just cover versions - although his expertise in that area has led to him gaining a name as an impersonator; but Geoff has his own style, and never in his wildest dreams wanted to be taken for some famous idol. Of course there are singers he admires: Mark Knopfler, Tom Waits, Sting, and above all John Lennon, and inevitably, without meaning to, he sometimes sounds like his mentors.
- But.... imitate Joe Cocker? No way! The cover material he presents is carefully selected to match his personal style and taste. Geoff Evans is his own man, has his own inimitable style - like it or not. And the fact is that most people do like it, a lot. His creative talent is evident - not only in the songs, for he writes much of his own original material - but also in his ability to grasp that special moment, in his sensitive black and white photography.
-
- So why isn't he more famous? Well, he likes it here. He likes the small world of S'Arracó, his friends, his two lovely sons. And, well.... it can still happen.

It was some time near the end of the 90s when the rock 'n roll scene in S'Arracó pulled its socks up and began to get serious. There were people with talent and energy. One day, it happened. "Come on guys, let's put a band together!" A band was formed. First an acoustic trio, but it kept on growing and the logistics became more difficult. In the end, additional musicians were brought in from Palma, where the island's pool of musical talent is deepest. The work was mostly well-paid party gigs. And one piece always found its way into the programme:
- "Hey, Cowboy, why don't you simply call the group Route 66", suggested Peter Kroll-Vogel, alias "the Birdman", a famous fan of the band and Geoff's ambitious mentor. At the time, the basic group consisted of Hans Hansen, Ramón Castillo, Julian García and Jan Kobrzinowski. "Why not?" So Route 66 became their name.
-
- As the years rolled by, the band's make-up went on changing. Then came an emblematic song, a song that nobody had heard before: Brown Skin Lady. "Who the hell wrote that one?" That was the beginning. And from that point on, Geoff wouldn't let it go. Secretly, he went on writing songs, until he had enough for a CD - and not just a CD, but a whole concert repertoire.
-
- Today Route 66 has transformed into GEOFF EVANS AND BAND. 80% of what we'll be hearing on February 20th comes from Geoff's own hand, with a little help from his friends. And as usual, there'll be a couple of surprises. Will there be Rock? Yes! But more important to Geoff and his friends: good music, fun, and feeling.....
